Vacation for Fashion Geeks

This week I’ve been on a busman’s holiday, helping an author prepare videos to accompany a book we’re publishing early next year. The venue: Iowa State University’s Textiles and  Clothing Museum. The climate-controlled storage facility houses more than 10,000 objects. I was mesmerized: see photos below.

An accompanying conservation laboratory has special ventilation to reduce dust and dirt, and includes technical equipment like microscopes for fiber analysis.

Wonderful to see. I’m wondering why Iowa State has that collection and if perhaps Purdue has something similar and I never knew about it

The collection of the Textiles and Clothing Museum at Iowa State University supports teaching and research in the Apparel, Merchandising, and Design program, as well as being featured in exhibits in the museum’s Mary Alice Gallery. I’ve included a link to the website.

Iowa State has that collection because it was compiled over a period of 80+ years through gifts from faculty, alumni, and friends, and by transfer from other institutions in Iowa. 🙂
